Bus driver shortage causes problems for Mid-Michigan mom

FLINT, Michigan (WJRT) –

Frustration from a Mid-Michigan mother on Friday who said she lost her job after two weeks of having to take her kids to school.

All of this stems from a shortage of bus drivers which is not just impacting school districts.

Flint’s mother who ABC 12 spoke to asked to remain anonymous, but was firmly convinced to share her story.

She says she has been taking her three children to and from Linden Charter Academy since they started and now just wants answers.

“I have no other choice, they have to, they have to study, I have no other choice.”

“They started school on August 30, they sat here for about 30, 40 minutes waiting on a bus… no bus,” she added.

The mother says she has contacted the school for answers and is working to resolve the issue.

“I called the school on Monday… and she said, ‘Hey, I contacted someone… Your kids will be taking the bus by the end of the week.’ “

When Friday arrived, she still had to take her children to school.

ABC 12 contacted Linden Schools Academy on Friday and has yet to receive a response.

But problems caused by a shortage of bus drivers are having an impact on schools in Mid-Michigan.

Bay City Schools Superintendent Dr Stephen Bigelow said bus driver shortages were a constant problem in several districts.

“[The] The shortage of bus drivers is a problem throughout Michigan and nationwide. “

He says during the first few weeks of school, problems with bus schedules are not uncommon, and with shortages of additional bus drivers, he asks families to be patient while school districts resolve their issues. problems.

“Districts are doing everything they can to find bus drivers, like in many other areas, it’s hard to find people to do it, but wait a minute, things will work out.

Because Linden Charter Academy is a charter school, it does not have a fleet of buses and offers rides via MTA.

CEO of Flint MTA Services said anyone with transportation issues should contact their customer service and should be able to figure out what the problem is.

Flint MTA says the shortages are also impacting its services and is currently looking to fill 40 positions.
