CBS Sports ranks the 25 best coaches in the Power Five
The facility arms race is alive and well throughout college football, but the coach arms race appears to have slowed down. Instead, the recent trend is for the best programs to promote coordinators to head coach when a top coach resigns or retires – think Oklahoma with its transition from Bob Stoops to Lincoln Riley. or Ohio State from Urban Meyer to Ryan Day.
It worked really well for both of these programs as well as for the original team that may have started this trend: Clemson, who hired Dabo Swinney after a successful stint as interim head coach in 2008. Swinney turned the Tigers into one of the two best programs in college football and is clearly the greatest coach in Clemson history.
