Commuter train delays on Newburyport/Rockport line persist after derailment – NBC Boston
Delays continue on the MBTA Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line following a train derailment Wednesday near Beverly, Massachusetts.
MBTA officials said safety inspections found Wednesday’s derailment caused damage to the switch. Two morning trains from Rockport and Beverly were canceled due to the issue.
According to the MBTA, all Newburyport line trains will start and end at North Beverly, and all Rockport trains will start and end at Montserrat. Passengers will be picked up by bus between Montserrat and Beverly, and between North Beverly and Beverly.
Crews are working to replace the switch and Keolis officials say normal service should resume on Monday.
MBTA officials described Wednesday’s incident as a “low-speed vertical derailment” of the 3:07 p.m. train from Rockport. Shuttle buses run to North Beverly/Montserrat to bring passengers to a rail connection, but passengers should expect continued delays.
The MBTA has been plagued with security issues and is currently under federal review.
Among the latest is a Green Line crash last week. Sources tell NBC10 investigators that in this accident, speed may have been a factor.
Other incidents include an accident last summer when two Green Line Branch B carriages collided on Commonwealth Avenue, injuring 27 people on board, including four train operators. A subsequent NTSB investigation found that a train was tripling the speed limit. Truck operator Owen Turner was charged with negligence last fall.
In January, former Suffolk County District Attorney Rachel Rollins launched a criminal investigation into MBTA’s safety issues in response to that cart crash.
The T also faced other security incidents in September last year. A Red Line train with nearly 50 people on board derailed and hit a platform at Broadway station. Also in that same month, nine people were injured after an escalator malfunctioned at Back Bay train station.
More recently, Robinson Lalin, 39, of Dorchester, died after catching his arm due to a door malfunction on the Red Line.
