Here’s the reason why Mahela Jayawardene will quit as Mumbai Indians coach

In an official statement, the Mumbai Indians have announced that Mahela Jayawardene will step down as head coach of the franchise. The Sri Lankan had won three trophies with the franchise. On that note, here we take a look at the reason why Mahela Jayawardene will quit as Mumbai Indians coach.

Mahela Jayawardene to step down as Mumbai Indians coach

The Sri Lankan has been promoted to ‘Global Head of Performance, MI’. In this role, Mahela will handle the coaching and scouting of the three franchises owned by the group. The three franchises are Mumbai Indians, MI Cape Town and MI Emirates. Zaheer Khan will now be the Global Head of Cricket Development, MI, moving from the role of Director of Cricket Operations.

For the past two seasons, Mumbai Indians have failed to reach the IPL playoffs. The mega-auction went off on a decent note but couldn’t produce an instant success. Nevertheless, Mahela has been promoted and he will be involved in deciding his replacement. On the other hand, Mark Boucher is reportedly on his way to becoming the head coach of MI Cape Town in the SA20 League.

Mumbai Indians will now look for replacement options for IPL 2023

It will be an intense race for the head coaches of IPL 2023. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders have already appointed their new coaches for the next season. The Punjab Kings are also in the running after parting ways with Anil Kumble. Now Mumbai Indians are also joining this race.

Usually Indians in Mumbai go for established names in the industry. However, most of them are already associated with other franchises. Nevertheless, some big names such as Justin Langer are still available in the market. It is likely that MI will make a statement by signing in this regard.
