Mayor of London pledges to advance 100% electric, 100% zero emission buses by 2034

Following a summit on zero emission buses in the UK, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced that all new buses ordered by Transport for London (TfL) will be electric in the future. The new policy is in line with the UK capital’s previously set target of making its entire fleet of buses electric by 2037. Along with the announcement, Khan announced an advanced timeline to see a fleet of fully electric buses from here 2034, or maybe even earlier.

London is a world famous city with centuries of history including the progress of mankind through all means of transport. With a population of over 9 million in the city alone, public transportation has remained at the heart of the bustling city’s means of travel.

In recent years, city leaders like Khan have publicly acknowledged the dangers of toxic emissions from diesel engines in transport vehicles like buses, and have adopted new policies to pivot the entire industry towards cleaner alternatives.

The City of London has previously worked to ensure that its entire bus fleet meets stringent Euro VI emission standards, the same standards as the Very Low Emission Zone.

In addition, TfL slowly started to introduce electric buses less than five years ago and has steadily increased this number. Thanks to a joint venture between BYD UK and Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL), there are now over 950 zero emission buses on the road or on the road.

Ahead of the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow in November, Khan has now upped the stakes to speed up plans for electric buses in the future.

London speeds up zero emissions calendar with more electric buses

In A press release from Khan’s office, the city’s transport department said it would work to accelerate its deadline to achieve a 100% zero-emission fleet by 2037. According to the mayor, all new bus purchases will be zero emission (electric or hydrogen) in the future.

The announcement came during the Zero-Emission Bus Summit, organized by the Campaign for Better Transport and TfL at London City Hall to promote zero-emission buses across the UK. Khan said:

London’s toxic air is a shameful health crisis that is causing premature death and stunting the growth of children’s lungs. Today, as part of our work to tackle both the harmful emissions we breathe and the climate emergency, I am proud to announce that London will no longer be sourcing new diesel or hybrid buses and will not be procuring as zero emission buses. Today’s announcement builds on the progress we have already made in tackling toxic air pollution. I have worked hard to ensure that the entire TfL bus fleet now meets ULEZ standards, which includes 550 zero emission buses. We must act now and accelerate the transition to a greener future, with cleaner air for all.

London’s municipal government previously presented plans to make all buses electric by 2037, saving around 4 million tonnes of carbon. Now, thanks to a more mature electric vehicle market, London expects to be able to provide a fully electric bus network three years earlier, in 2034.

Better yet, the mayor’s office believes that with the support of the UK government, TfL can meet the country’s goal of reducing carbon emissions by 68% by 2030. If supported financially, Khan believes London can. deliver its zero-emission bus fleet four years earlier. to 2030, thus saving an additional ton of carbon. Khan clarified:

In this year of COP26 and after showing my ambition for London to be net zero by 2030, I am committed to doing everything possible to help clean up the transport network and reduce its emissions.

London currently contributes between a third and a half of all new UK bus orders in any given year, supporting an industry of 3,000 jobs across the UK.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021 (COP26) will take place in Glasgow from October 31 to November 12.
