Metro, electric buses, transport from Qatar beyond the World Cup
The Doha Metro, along with an electric bus system, will be the primary means of transportation that will take fans to their destinations during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar next year.
The world’s biggest football event is still over a year away, but preparations are already underway, with the new underground rail network at its heart.
Built mostly underground and through the Qatari capital and its suburbs, the network has been operational since 2019, providing a reliable transportation alternative in a rapidly expanding city.
The first phase of the project saw the creation of 37 stations, with three lines, Red, Green and Gold, running along a network of 76 kilometers.
The 60-meter-long fully automated trains have a capacity of 416 passengers and are divided into three sections: Standard, Family (for single women and men or women traveling with children aged 11 or under) and Gold ( Goldclub travel card holders) class where there are USB ports for travelers to charge their mobiles.
Trains can travel up to 100 km / h and are fully equipped with video surveillance systems and public Wi-Fi.
At the heart of this is Msheireb station, the largest in the network, as well as its interchange serving as a hub for the three lines that cross it.
The station has a total of four main levels and is approximately 40 meters deep.
The station’s rich interior spaces also offer an array of commercial boutiques, while the unassuming exterior is dotted with bike racks.
Organizers expect more than a million people to arrive in Doha during the 2022 World Cup, and the metro system was designed to be its transportation mainstay.
The system connects Doha’s Hamad International Airport directly to five of the eight host stadiums, with the remaining compact event venues accessible via a mix of train and bus options.

Opportunities for store owners and entrepreneurs
Qatar Rail offers retailers a possibility of opening new stores in the Lusail tram stations of the Doha Metro before it opens. In an advertisement, Qatar Rail announced that at least five commercial spaces – Marina, Marina Promenade, Yacht Club, Esplanade and Energy City South – are currently available for rent. Units start at QR3,000 ($ 824) per month.
According to Qatar Rail, the Lusail tram network consists of four lines and 25 overhead and underground stations and connects it to the Doha Metro via two interchange stations: Lusail and Legtaifiya.
Retailers who will benefit from this offer at Lusail tram stations can also get up to 12 months of royalty for a free and flexible contract lasting three or five years. Water and electricity costs will be included in the price of the license.
The total route of the Lusail tramway is approximately 19 km long and approximately 1,500 m² of retail space is spread over 43 points of sale.
Qatar Rail earlier announced retail opportunities in its 9,200m² space spread across 37 stations of the Doha Metro and Lusail tram network, giving retailers, including small and medium-sized businesses, the opportunity to open new stores and expand their reach.
“We have focused on providing accessible stations with distinctive branding, signage and digital displays inside and outside of stations,” Qatar Rail said on its website.
Retail spaces (licensed trades) include services, general retail, food and beverage, convenience, automated teller machines (ATMs) and vending machines.
As Qatar succeeds in transforming its public transport system into an environmentally friendly mode, the country will have 2,700 bus stops by 2022.
“Aligning with # QNV2030, the country’s public transport system will become 25% electric by 2022, and Qatar is building several large electric bus stations and will have 2,700 bus stops by 2022,” said the Government Communications Office (GCO) in a recent tweeter.
He added that more than 1,100 buses will be deployed during the FIFA event.
Earlier in September, the director of the transport ministry’s technical affairs department said contracts would be signed for electric vehicle charging units.
Public buses, government school buses and Doha Metro service buses will gradually switch to electrification, reaching the percentage of deployment needed to reduce harmful carbon emissions from buses by 2030.
About 700 electric charging stations would be built for the electric buses that would transport spectators during matches.
Project delivery details
The rail transit system is being developed under the government of Qatar’s 130 billion euros ($ 148 billion) diversification and modernization strategy, involving public and private investments. The campaign also aims to reduce Qatar’s dependence on natural gas exports.
In October 2012, the groundbreaking ceremony for the project took place and construction began at the Msheireb interchange station.
In December 2019, the rail metro project contained a 76 km network with three lines and 37 stations.
A consortium of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Mitsubishi Corporation, Hitachi, Kinki Sharyo and Thales submitted a bid for the turnkey construction of a fully automated driverless metro system in March 2014.
The work package included the delivery of 75 three-car trains, tracks, landing doors, a marshalling yard, a signaling system, electrical distribution, tunnel ventilation and telecommunications. The first four trains of the Doha metro were delivered in August 2017.
In October 2018, Kinki Sharyo received an order for the delivery of 35 additional trains, bringing the total fleet to 110. The new fleet was intended to meet the increase in passenger numbers during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
