The California Energy Commission has awarded the North County Transit District a $ 4 million grant to build a hydrogen refueling station at the district’s Breeze bus maintenance facilities in the Oceanside Industrial Park, officials said Monday. public transport.

“NCTD remains committed to being at the forefront of zero emission technology, providing clean transportation choices for our customers and improving air quality in our communities,” said Tony Kranz, Chairman of the District Board of Directors. and member of the municipal council of Encinitas.

“This new technology and infrastructure will improve Breeze’s overall operations by reducing the time it takes to refuel, expanding the range of services and increasing the fuel consumption of our fleet,” Kranz said in a district press release. .

Fuel cell buses run on oxygen and hydrogen, emitting only water vapor. The new refueling station and buses are expected to reduce carbon dioxide production by 78,825 tonnes per year, roughly the amount of emissions from 200 million kilometers traveled by an average passenger car, transit officials said. .

Construction of the refueling station is expected to be completed in mid-2022. The planned transition puts the district ahead of local, state and federal targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the statement said.

The district plans to purchase eight hydrogen-powered electric buses and six battery-powered electric buses over the next two years.

“The accelerated deployment of zero-emission transit solutions demonstrates NCTD’s commitment to providing the community with fair and clean transportation and supports social mobility through increased access to education, jobs and resources. community, ”said Patty Monahan, member of the Energy Commission.

The project is funded by the Energy Board’s Clean Transportation Program, which distributes over $ 100 million annually to support innovation and the deployment of advanced transportation and fuel technologies.
