Thailand’s biggest light festival kicks off off Phuket shores
Thailand’s biggest light festival arrived on the shores of Nai Harn Beach in Phuket yesterday. Tourism Authority of Thailand officials greeted revelers at the Aqua Lumina Illumination festival with, as you’d expect, plenty of colorful lights. The Phuket edition of the festival is set to last until May 31.
Aqua Lumina Phuket’s theme is “Land of the Andaman Guardians”. Like all Aqua Lumina festivals, it presents light sculptures and multimedia shows, as well as mapping projections with 3D images with light. Local musicians perform at the festival, with street vendors serving dishes from local chefs. Prizes are up for grabs for participants from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. every night of the festival. Free entry.
TAT Deputy Governor for Digital Research and Development, Nithi Siprae, said the main target of the festival is domestic tourists.
“This will be the main target group that can rehabilitate and help entrepreneurs in the country’s tourism industry, especially in the 3 high-potential provinces on the Andaman coast, namely Krabi, Phang Nga and Phuket…”
To get to Aqua Lumina in Phuket, people can take free shuttle buses from the 3 main pick-up points at Phuket Municipal Market on Ranong Road, Central Floresta Mall on Bypass Road and Karon Beach . Buses will run at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Return buses will leave the festival at 6pm, 7pm, 6pm, 9pm and 10:30pm.
When Aqua Lumina started last week in Krabi, the theme was “Land of Magical Creatures”. The Krabi Festival is still ongoing and will last until May 25. The festival will travel to Phang Nga next week on May 27 (Friday), with the theme “Phang Nga, the Land of Dancing Waves”. The Phang Nga festival will last until June 12.
