Trichy:

Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has introduced two air-conditioned bus services from the city’s central bus station. The buses that had been deployed earlier in the town of Karur were diverted to Trichy because the attendance was low. TNSTC sources have stated that AC buses will run from the central bus station to Srirangam and Thuvakudi and will have a minimum fare of Rs 15 and a maximum fare of Rs 40. Passes will not apply to these buses and Fares will be double as requested in regular buses and LSS Services (red buses).

The buses will be able to accommodate 40 passengers and 20 people standing. Both routes have been identified as viable as passengers heading to tourist destinations and educational institutions, including NIT Trichy, can opt for the service. The buses will have 16 bus stops covering both the suburb and the city, including Thillai Nagar, Chathiram bus stop, TVS tollgate, Thiruverumbur and Ariyamangalam industrial zone.

TNSTC said people preferring limited-stop service might consider premium AC buses, as Trichy has stuffy weather most days of the year. “Based on the response, TNSTC can operate more air conditioning fleets to encourage public transportation among passengers going to transit hubs,” said V Nadaraja, district president of AITUC.

Of TNSTC Trichy’s 150 city buses, around 15 have been upgraded to modern low-floor buses, while the remainder were mostly over five years old. “At rush hour, the seats fill up. Passengers coming as a family agree with the prices, while a part of the people disembark after being informed of the price of the trip, ”said R Ramakrishnan, driver of an AC bus in Trichy.

In early 2011, an AC mofussil bus was used as a city bus for a short time, but the service was later withdrawn. While residents of Trichy offered another AC bus service connecting the central bus station and the rail junction with Trichy International Airport, TNSTC said it would take a call based on the public response.
