BALLYMENA’s manufacturer Wrightbus has secured a new order for its hydrogen fuel cell buses.
UK public transport company Go-Ahead has signed the contract which will see single-decker vehicles deployed by Brighton & Hove and Metrobus next June.
The GB Kite Hydroliners manufactured by Wrightbus will be the first hydrogen-powered vehicles in Go-Ahead’s fleet of over 6,000 buses.
A second tranche of 34 hydrogen buses is also planned.
It comes just a day after Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon announced an agreement to purchase 38 Wrightbus battery-powered electric buses for the Derry City urban network.
Wrightbus executive chairman Jo Bamford said greenhouse gases from transport accounted for a third of the UK’s total carbon emissions.
“To date, our world-class two-stage hydroliners have prevented one million kg of CO2 from entering the atmosphere,†he said.
“The introduction of the new single-stage GB Kite Hydroliner will help prevent the release of even more carbon. It’s fantastic to see Brighton & Hove and Metrobus take this vital and progressive step towards decarbonising public transport to help the UK meet its ambitious net zero goals. “
